Who we are

Fra Angelico

We are members of the Order of Preachers (OP), better known as Dominicans. The Order was founded by St Dominic de Guzmán in 1216, in response to an urgent need for informed preaching. The Albigensian cult was gaining ground to an alarming extent, because most Christians at the time were very poorly instructed. The cult saw the material world as evil, and escape from it the only route to salvation. Dominic’s sermons have not survived, but he must have placed a strong emphasis on the goodness of creation and of the human body: today we might use the word ‘holistic’ to describe this.

What we do

We do a great many different things as we try to respond to the needs of the Christian community in our time and place. We run churches and parishes; we work as chaplains and teachers in second- and third level colleges; we preach in retreat houses and at parish missions – indeed anywhere the opportunity arises; we write and publish books and articles, in print and digital form; we are involved in Scriptural and theological research; we are chaplains to hospitals and convents; we are missionaries in several parts of the world. Every talent can be used in the great work of proclaiming God’s word.

  • The resources for Racial Justice Sunday 2009 (13th of September 2009) have now been been finalised and are available here: http://www.ctbi.org.uk/396.

The format for the resources has changed: unlike previous years, when the materials came assembled in a pack which was sent out, the resources this year are available for free download from the website of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI).

The theme this year is 'Who do you say I am?' - Mark 8:29   The material has been divided into seven sections:

    1. Prayers
    2. Hymns
    3. Sermon Suggestions
    4. Biblical Reflections
    5. Reflection based on personal stories
    6. Children’s activity
    7. Resources for young people.

Please note: if needed, the Dominican Justice Office can print and post out materials from any of the above sections. Should you wish to talk to Marie Williams about this, or have any questions about Racial Justice Sunday, please contact Marie by email or at the link here. More...

Dominicans exist to proclaim the
WORD OF GOD
"The Word - that is the faith
we proclaim - is very near you.
It is on your lips and in your heart"
(Romans 10:8)

THE WORD

The Word

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God...

The Word

All things came into being through him, and without him nothing came into being.

What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it...

The word became flesh

The Word became flesh and lived among us,

and we have seen his glory...

Requiem

There are no anniversaries under requiem for today.

Quote of the Day

You who do not yet see God will, by loving your neighbour, make yourself worthy of seeing him. By loving your neighbour, you cleanse your eyes so you can see God. Love your neighbour, then, and see within yourself the source of this love of neighbour. There you will see God insofar as you are able. – St Augustine
Christ was tempted in the desert; and if you are to put on his nature, you must go through his Journey, from the Incarnation to the Ascension. And though you are neither able nor expected to be able to do what he did, still you must enter wholly into his Process, and die continually to sin. For Sophia (Wisdom) is wed to the soul only through that quality which springs up in the soul through the death of Christ. Then it flowers as a new plant in Eternity.
(Jacob Boehme)

Ancient Priories

By the 14th century there were thirty-six Dominican foundations in Ireland. The countryside is dotted with the ruins of these ancient priories. We list them here, with brief descriptions.
